Change is an interesting
thing. It's a bit of a gamble. Will you end up better or worse off
after this change? There's a lot to think about.
Where to buy lunch is a short term issue, and you probably don't have to stay up at night thinking about it. Your career is different! Hairdressing takes almost a year to learn and costs thousands of dollars. Esthetics takes months to learn and also costs thousands of dollars. So staying up a few nights worrying about your decision is more realistic. What are the issues? Cost - Is this the best deal you can get? WHAT are you getting for your money? It is the cheapest place in town... the most expensive... Are there any hidden costs? Do you have to pay anything extra for styling products? Do they HAVE any styling products? Ask to see them. Quality - First look at the student kit. Are you getting professional equipment and materials? Do you even GET any equipment? Some schools provide you with items that won't even make it through your basic training. Look at the student kit! Not just a photo, look at the real equipment. Does their hairdressing program offer you quality scissors, blow dryer, flat iron, curling irons, etc? Does their esthetics program offer you a machine & tools? Salon Atmosphere - Is this the atmosphere of a salon or spa? If so you'll already understand how a real salon or spa works by the time you graduate. If not, you'll have to learn how a real salon or spa works after you graduate because you'll have all of your experience learning how school environments work. Do they have professional equipment for you to use? Do they have a hair steamer/processor? Do they have a Climazon? Do you start out working in a station, or will you start out with your manikin bolted to a shelf in the back room for a month? (Wheeee... fun?) Staff - Is the qualified? Find out the background of the people that will be teaching you. Are they locally trained or nationally trained or internationally trained? Do they travel to hair and esthetic shows? How often? When was the last one? Are they licensed hairdressers, estheticians, and instructors? How are they to deal with? Do you feel like they're interested in talking with you or do you feel like they're annoyed at having to talk to you? Professional Reputation - What is the professional reputation of this school with the local salons? Call a few up! Pick half a dozen salons you're interested in working at and ask them where you should go. Afraid they won't tell you? People that graduate from hairdressing or esthetics school either graduate with the skills they need or they don't. It's THAT simple. Those that graduate without the skills they need have to be retrained by the salons and spas they work in. Those that DO have the skills they need can start working right away. Which type of graduate do YOU think salons and spas are looking for? Technology - Is the school you're looking at keeping up with technology? Do they even HAVE a web site? What does it look like? Will you learn how to enter client information on a point of sale computer system? So they HAVE a computer? Will you learn how the front desk works or will you even be allowed behind the desk? These are all importing things to find out BEFORE you begin your training. You should start out your new career with a successful experience and not an experience that you regret. Good luck! Make a GREAT choice! |
